His ears picked out the sound of Man, angry voices, shouts. He
reared and whirled, catching sight of them. They caught sight of him
at the same moment and their anger washed upward in a wave. The
fading light glinted dully off the counter-clockwise twist of
midnight and blood that stood proudly centered in the unicorn's
forehead. The dull glow from his horn guided them like a beacon in
his direction.
- Excerpt from "Infinite Loop"
Upstairs, the corporate lounge was decorated with glitter and
sparkle, crepe-paper streamers twisted around windows and table
edges. Someone even thought to hang a disco ball from the center of
the ceiling. Upper management mingled with the rest of the staff
while the CEO laughed and joked with a group consisting of two
programmers, a project manager and the new technical writer. The
television showed the live broadcast of the ball dropping in New
York, and everyone was far enough into the company-provided
champagne that no one noticed the cameras go out when the ball
reached its destination.
- Excerpt from "When She Thinks before She Acts"
Vera felt like her mother was inside of her head, scolding
her for what she saw there. She took another long drink of her
coffee and waited for the drug to deaden the connection between the
chip implanted in her head and her brain. Her tongue darted out over
her lips and one of the waitresses slunk over. "More
coffee?" Jezebel purred. Her breath stirred wisps of Vera's
hair and tickled her ear.
"Please." She set the empty cup on the tray. "Just
like the last."
