Someone once said that when we come into this world, and when we leave it,
we are alone. It seems to me that whoever said that got it at least half
wrong. When you were born, your mother was with you, in fact surrounded you
during your journey towards life. The two of you were _joined_ by an
umbilical cord, and after your birth, you were laid on her belly, that cord
still pulsing as her blood mingled with yours.
Believe me, that's not being alone.
As for the leaving part, there may be some truth in that. I'll find out in
an hour or so.
- Excerpt from "Ozark Fever"
. . . It was nearly one by the time I got back home, which gave me only
three hours to clean up and relax before I opened the bar. I wished it were
shorter. I'd have to deal with Chastity, and this was one subject we didn't
see eye to eye on.
"There's been another one, hasn't there. Hasn't there?" Chastity was at
the door the moment I went in. Her voice rang shrill.
"Yes." My shoulders sagged. I shut the door behind me and headed towards
the kitchen to grab some lunch.
"Damn it, George. How long is this going to go on before you do something?
Can't you feel how wrong it is?" Chastity stopped, chewed her lip, then
continued in a softer tone. "Come on, honey. You could run a bar anyplace.
Why does it have to be the Loosey Goose?"
